we love sandwiches

FrycheesesandwichSeen on Ask Metafilter recently: Why does a sandwich made by someone else always taste better than one you make yourself?

Lots of great responses in the thread; many people feel the way I do about it, which is that when it is true, it's due to TLC and to you being surprised by combinations someone else came up with.

What's your favorite sandwich that you buy? That someone makes for you? That you make for yourself? Tell us in the comments!

My favorite sandwich to buy is a RonBob with bacon at the Delion Deli on Broadway & Waverly, right across the street from where I went to grad school. It's nothing fancy: fried egg, tomato, lettuce, onion, mayo on white bread, but so tasty, cheap and cheery that I had it nearly every day my last semester.

My favorite sandwich to make for myself involves bacon and brie. Second favorite involves jack cheese, pesto and a sandwich press.

My favorite sandwich is the smoked meat in Montreal. They come in lean, med., and fatty. I like the fatty. I've only been to Montreal once so I can't tell you where the best place is, but the famous Schwartzs'Deli was delicious.

At the moment, my favorite sandwich to buy is the #1 at "Viet-Nam Banh Mi So 1" on Broome between Mott and Elizabeth. It's cheap ($3) and they use 3 kinds of meat (grilled pork and two kinds of salami, I think). The cilantro and carrots also make it crisp and refreshing for the summer.

My favorite homemade sandwiches have cheese and are pressed in a George Foreman grill. Also, neither the cheese nor the meet should touch the bread.

I'll save my fav sandwich for another time, but this post gave me a great idea. Have a Secret Sandwich party. The idea is that you find out who your sandwich recipient is in advance and think up a 'wich with them in mind. Then, when you get to the party you put the sandwich together and everyone presents their sandwich to the recipient. Could be pretty awesome.

i don't think i have a favorite sandwich but the one sandwich i'm craving for is the Midnight Sandwich with croquettes from Porto's Bakery in Glendale, Los Angeles. Oh its so good, especially the croquettes!!! A close second is a plain ham and egg sandwich from chinese bakeries. 2 nights ago, I made myself a pork chop sandwich with veggies and fake crab meat salad on potatoe bread.

I like all kinds of sandwiches, but especially deli sandwiches. They put so much stuff in there. They put so many things that i would never think to put into a single sandwich. oh the combinations. I must stop this comment now and find a deli.
Thank you for the great post, and a most excellent blog

I think my very favorite sandwich right now is a chicken and pesto panini with tomatoes and artichokes smothered in mozarella cheese.... god I am drooling just thinking of it.... I had it 4 times for lunch last week....
cheers...
Chan

I have so many favorite sammiches, but the one that comes to mind right now is cheddar, crunchy sprouts, and spicy mayo on 7-grain bread, from Columbine in Tribeca.

My favorite to make is some variation of avocado, crushed garlic, goat cheese, salt and pepper on sourdough.

how do you get your pictures to look so good! nicely done.
