We've walked by Sapporo East many times, noting it's almost always full dining room and many Japanese patrons. Last night we decided to duck in and check it out for ourselves.
The menu is extensive though focused on ramen and sushi. Vegetarian options are abundant and noted throughout. There is also a good selection of sake served hot, warm, or cold, and a one pager of the day's specials.
I opted for one of the day's specials, big eye toro (tuna) sashimi dinner (pictured above). Instead of thin slices of tuna, I was served American-style sashimi -- giant hunks of raw fish! I have seen a lot of big sushi in New York, but nothing quite like this. The tuna was also quite lean and not very toro-like. Completely different from what I expected, but not bad for what it was.
Anil ordered the rokuban ramen, ramen with bits of ground beef and tofu. Served in an oversized bowl (unfortunately my photo lacks any reference to give you a true sense of the size of the bowl), enough for two to easily share and the ideal comfort food on a cold night. Neither of us left the table hungry.
Overall, a good neighborhood spot for affordable Japanese. Ramen and the daily specials appear to be the best bests, sushi is decent and affordable. I'm sure we'll be back again.
